Legolas-inspired knives (complete) by Celyddon Legolas-inspired knives (complete) by Celyddon
These are now done.  The colors are a little muted due to the Mod Podge, but I'm okay with that.

The knives are made of 1/4" thick poplar, and they are full tang.  Knives were cut with a scroll saw after being patterned out on a 4ft long plank, and the handles are made from 5/8" thick EVA foam that was carved using a Black and Decker RTX rotary tool.  I did faux wood graining using acrylic paints in nutmeg, light bambi, and chocolate browns, and the ornamentation is made from styrene and printer paper.  The blade and styrene bits were spraypainted using Rust-O-Leum's 18k metallic accents gold, and the printer paper was painted with Ceramcoat metallic silver (after being cut out carefully with manicure scissors).  The paper was glued down with a glue stick, and the styrene was attached using high-temp hot glue.

The sheaths are made with 5/8" thick EVA foam walls that are 1/4" wide, sandwiched between pieces of styrene.  The ornamentation is also styrene.  The black covers are made from upholstery velvet that was patterned by tracing the sheaths and sewing 5/8" around the outline, then stitching together in the standard way.  The covers are single thickness.  The ornamentation was decorated with Tulip metallic gold fabric paint, then spraypainted using the Rust-O-Leum gold again.  They are attached with high temp hot glue.  The back of each sheath has a magnetic washer hot-glued down, and there is a magnet stuck to the washer so that I can attach the sheaths to my cloak without actually having to sew into the cloak.

These are heavily based on Legolas' knives from Lord of the Rings; I changed the colors to better match the Ranger I am building for Texas Renaissance Festival.

I'm always happy to answer construction questions or provide templates as needed.  Most of my research and sketching came entirely from alleycatscratch.com, and they get richly deserved credit for helping me out.
