Hadhafang Scabbard / Sheath Basic Core Completed by Celyddon Hadhafang Scabbard / Sheath Basic Core Completed by Celyddon
So I finally completed a sheath for Hadhafang (Arwen's sword from Lord of the Rings). The ornamental parts aren't done--I'll do those either before TRF if I have time, or after TRF if I don't--but the core is done. I wanted to be able to wear the sword with my Arwen costume at TRF this weekend.

Sheaths for Hadhafang are hard to find and come by--and if you do find them, they're expensive. So I opted to make my own, inspired by a sudden thought while daydreaming at work. Why not use EVA foam?

This sheath was created using EVA foam as the core, sandwiched between paper mached posterboard with a cover of brown cotton broadcloth. The inside is padded with pink (yes, pink was all I had) fleece to cushion and protect the blade.

I filmed a tutorial on how I made this for our podcast and will be showing it during our next episode. If you haven't been following our podcast, CosPod: the podcast for all things cosplay, you've been missing out. The tutorial will apply to all swords of all types since the only factor in making it is the shape of the blade.

It has a belt loop so that I can both hang it on my belt and peace-tie it for places that require it, such as TRF. Now I just need to whip out a quick belt cover so that the webbed strapping I'm using for a belt blends in with the costume.

I'm REALLY happy with how this turned out. Really, really happy. It's not perfect--I crapped out on the corners of the scabbard, so the fabric pulls and wrinkles a little--but I can live with that. Enjoy! If you have any questions about this, feel free to ask. This is the only time I can't provide a pattern since I used the pattern pieces in the scabbard itself, but I can answer questions certainly.
