Elven-themed corslet by Celyddon Elven-themed corslet by Celyddon
I'm calling this a 'corslet' because it's not entirely a corset--it's not boned and only sits on my waist; if it were laced, it would be a waist cincher.  I used the same base pattern as the corslet for my Raava costume; the fabric is black upholstery velvet/velveteen.

I freehand-traced a few of the Elven embroidery patterns from Lord of the Rings (courtesy of AlleyCatScratch's website, of course), then arranged two of them to make this pattern (the center is one pattern, flanked by copies of the other).  I then re-traced the pattern onto posterboard, outlined it with a Sharpie (to make the lines consistently thicker), then painstakingly cut out the lines with manicure scissors and an Exacto knife.  I then used that posterboard as a template and stenciled guidelines onto the velvet with Jacquard gold paint; once the paint was dried (I sped up the process with a mini desk fan), I used Tulip metallic fabric paint to 'ink' the pattern in more fully.  Yes, I 'inked' the whole thing by hand, in segments--I had to take breaks constantly.  It takes fine motor control to grip and consistently move a paint tube for long periods of time, and eventually your muscles -will- get tired.

The corslet will be fully lined (once the paint is COMPLETELY dry) and assembled with its other panels; it will close with a separating coil zipper for convenience.  It will lay over a pouch belt that I still need to build as well.

Incidentally: I do still have the original pattern templates if anyone wants them for embroidery/tracing purposes--please don't use this corslet picture for tracing; you'll want the originals, and I'm happy to scan and upload them.
